Acne develops when a build up of excess sebum, dead skin cells, acne-causing bacteria, and debris clog the skinโs pores. The acne-causing bacteria in the clogged pores can cause inflammation, leading to more severe acne breakouts. Although acne most commonly affects the face, body acne may occur anywhere there are sebaceous glands, including the chest, back, and buttocks. More commonly, however, patients with butt breakouts are not experiencing true acne, but rather a skin condition called folliculitis. Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles in the skin become infected, inflamed, and irritated, resulting in red bumps that appear acne-like.
Folliculitis may develop for a number of reasons, but often occurs when friction from tight-fitting clothing irritates the skin, resulting in the presence of irritated, red bumps. Avoiding tight-fitting clothing, showering regularly (especially after exercise), and using the right skincare are great steps to preventing and getting rid of butt acne and folliculitis. Body washes or lotions for eliminating buttne should contain active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Although it may be tempting to scrub a butt acne breakout, itโs important to gently exfoliate and not over-scrub in order to prevent exacerbating skin irritation and worsening the breakout. If these steps donโt help clear your buttne, then itโs time to schedule a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist, like Dr. Michele Green in NYC.
